CadmiumCheck Performance Characteristics: Detection Limit for Ceramics
click here for a printable version

Background:

Cadmium containing glazes are used in the ceramic industry on pottery, earthenware, bone china and porcelain. Cadmium glazes produce brilliant, saturated, red and orange colors. Metallic glazes can also contain cadmium. Under certain conditions, cadmium can leach from the glazed surface into food that is placed on it. CadmiumCheck™ swabs can be used to detect leachable cadmium in glazes.

Sensitivity (Limit of Detection):

CadmiumCheck™ Swabs were randomly selected from production lots and used to test glazes of known cadmium concentration.

Results:
Cadmium Conc (ppm) CadmiumCheck™ Result
0.10 - 0.18 -
0.17 - 0.48 -
0.89 - 1.40 +
1.3 +
Summary:

Limit of sensitivity is greater than or equal to 0.89ppm.
