LeadCheck Swab Color Development after they were rubbed on paint containing varying concentrations of lead (0% to 10%). The leaded paint was prepared by mixing increasing concentrations of white lead in semi-gloss acrylic paint (prepared by D/L Laboratories, New York). For this study, these paints were applied to a glass surface and allowed to dry thoroughly. At the time the paint was tested, notches were scraped through the paint; a LeadCheck Swab was activated according to the kit instructions and rubbed into the prepared notch for 30 seconds. The resulting color on the tip of the Swab for each lead paint concentration is shown in the photograph.

Note: The actual color obtained for each lead concentration in the field may vary slightly depending on paint type, lead pigment (white lead, lead acetate, lead carbonate, lead chromate, etc.) and the age of the paint. In order to get accurate results, each LeadCheck Swab test must be done exactly the same way. It is important to use the Swab immediately following activation in order to maximize sensitivity and to rub for the full 30 seconds in a freshly prepared notch that cuts through all the paint to the substrate surface.
