Testing* Surfaces for Lead Containing Dust

Background:

Lead-containing dust is a primary cause of lead poisoning in children. Actively deteriorating paint (peeling, chipping, or chalking), or renovation work on lead-painted surfaces can create dangerous levels of lead paint dust. LeadCheck® Swabs can be used to screen for the presence of lead-containing dust on any solid surface. They are especially useful for detecting dust remaining after a clean-up. Dust sequesters into cracks and crevices. LeadCheck® Swabs effectively screen the cracks and crevices and can detect remaining lead contamination.

Method:
  1. Activate a LeadCheck® Swab according to the instructions that come with the kit.

  2. While squeezing gently to keep the LeadCheck® reagent at the tip of the swab, rub the surface being tested for dust. Rub for 15 – 30 seconds, checking for color change on the swab.
Recommendation: Test several areas. Lead dust may not be evenly distributed.

Interpretation of Results:

If the swab turns pink within 15-30 seconds, lead-containing dust is present. Clean the surface using a household detergent and retest the surface with LeadCheck® Swabs. Repeat this procedure until a negative LeadCheck® result is obtained.

Precaution:

Dirty surfaces can coat the Swab tip with a dark film, obscuring color development at the tip. When this happens, clean the surface and test again using a new LeadCheck® Swab
