Testing* for Low Levels of Lead in Paint
There are at least two ways to detect lead at low levels (0.05% to 0.06%). A special enhancing reagent and
applicator can be requested by contacting Hybrivet Systems, Inc.
I. Direct detection of lead on the paint (for light colored paint).
- Score the paint to be tested.
- Apply one drop of enhancing solution to the test area.
- Rub the applicator swab into the enhancing solution on the scored paint for about 30 seconds.
- Activate a LeadCheck Swab.
- Rub the test area firmly with the activated swab for at least 30 seconds.
- The paint will turn pink if lead is present at 0.05% and above.
In this method the swab tip may not turn pink or red, but the color on the paint is unmistakable.
II. Indirect detection of low levels of lead on a painted surface. If it is not possible to see color development on
the paint because it has color, follow the method below.
- Score the paint to be tested.
- Apply one drop of enhancing solution to the test area.
- Rub the applicator swab into the enhancing solution on the scored paint for about 30 seconds.
- Rub the scored area firmly with the enhanced swab for at least 30 seconds.
- Activate a LeadCheck Swab.
- Drop a drop of the yellow/orange solution from the LeadCheck Swab on the tip of the small swab used
to test the paint. Rub the area again for about 30 seconds.
- If lead is present at 0.05% or higher, the very tip of the swab will turn pink. (This color becomes more
obvious as the background color clears.)
